The Sheep Thief: How Anyone, Anywhere, Can Make a Positive Change in Life

Rate this book
Several hundred years ago in a quaint village in Italy, two young men were caught stealing sheep. They were immediately taken to trial before the town judge, found guilty and, there in front of their fellow villagers, were given their sentence. It was a cruel, harsh and painful sentence that would mark them for life. One of these men died a lonely, embarrassed and embittered old man who was far away from home, penniless and without any friends, while the other overcame his past to become the wealthiest, most successful man in the region. Everyone knew his name and honored him. He became the patriarch. There was not one human being who had not been touched by him in some way. Al Walker utilizes the parable of The Sheep Thief and the character of Mr. Taylor, a successful corporate board member and mentor, to remind us that anyone, anywhere can make a positive change in life.

Based on an Italian parable about the two sheep thieves, Al Walker wrote, The Sheep Thief: How Anyone, Why, anywhere, Can Make a Positive Change in Life.

I watched the video in which Al Walker introduced his book. In his very challenging 20s, Bob Johnson, who wrote a foreword to this book, told him the parable about the two sheep thieves caught stealing and got sentences in front of the village. One thief ended up with a miserable life and death, and the other became a saint. The initial of the Sheep Thief is the same as that of a saint. This parable had a huge impact on his life. Walker seriously thought about what to be and what to do.

There are thirty-one steps you have to follow to actualize yourself. The steps sound great. But I don't like a book showing steps to follow. It is too artificial to be a novel. No wonder Walker names several writers I do not appreciate. I also found misinformation about a very simple scientific fact.

These are my favorite lines.

One of the most effective formulas for failure is arrogance and cynicism.

Perhaps the most splendid statement of being yourself was given to us by the God of the universe when he said, 'I AM THAT I AM!' We are expected to be what He wants us to be-unique-possessing our own set of strengths and skills and knowledge and attitudes and gifts and talents.

You will FIND yourself in service to your fellow man, your country, and your God.

Weakness should only be identified to determine (a) what additional strengths are needed or (b) what is needed to further develop existing strengths.

There are a lot more.
