I love humorous travel writing, and Peter Fleming has the gift of making boring, uncomfortable or downright dangerous experiences funny in the telling. His self-deprecating style makes light of difficult or frightening experiences, and he gives a fascinating glimpse of life in remote places while denying any sort of expertise.

There's poignancy in News from Tartary's dedication to 'V.F.' - I've read enough about Ian Fleming to know this was their father, Valentine, killed on the Western Front when Peter was ten.

Although written over 90 years ago this book still has a very contemporary feel written with humour and self deprecation. His analysis of the politics of the region I found confusing but the heart of the book is the incredibly tough journey which was riveting.
