The Suspension of Time is a collection of essays on Dinnerstein’s masterpiece, The Fulbright Triptych. It includes writing by an extraordinarily diverse range of contributors, from the Pulitzer-Prize-winning novelist Jhumpa Lahiri to acclaimed poet Dan Beachy-Quick, and from art historians such as Colin Eisler, Albert Boime, and Thomas M. Messer to composer George Crumb and actor John Turturro. Each essay in The Suspension of Time offers its unique perspective, but taken as a whole they develop a dialogue of collaboration that directly reflects The Fulbright Triptych’s inherent message of symphonic connectivity, and demonstrate the rich potential for collaboration between visual, literary, musical, and other arts.
Simon Dinnerstein's THE FULBRIGHT TRIPTYCH is a singular masterpiece of painting that delivers art history, commentary, content and virtuoso painting in one staggeringly beautiful work. Measuring 7 feet by 14 feet and painted from 1971 - 1974 the painting is a family triptych that captures all of the flavor of Americana and places visual quotes form art history as far back are recorded history extends. It is symphonic in nature with themes and variations, full tutti passages among the solo portions, a work that must be studied for hours to digest the spectrum of content and the meaning each of the individual portions of the triptych have on the work as a whole.
The book is a work of art in and of itself, a very large tome complete with many photographs of details form the triptych as well as words form 44 essayists, each telling us how the work has affected them and placing the work in the history of contemporary art and inspiration is deserves. Among the essays are words from Dinnerstein's daughter, the celebrated pianist Simone Dinnerstein, George Crumb, Richard T. Arndt, Juliette Aristides, Rudolf Arnheim, Guy Davenport, Kate Holden , David Krakauer, Jhumpa Lahiri, Ulrich Littmann, Herb Schapiro, George Staempfli, Edward Sullivan, George Tooker,John Turturro and others. The variety of contributors almost matches the variations of imagery and message of the painting.
This is one of those books that not only pays homage to a fine artist and a great work but also provides insight into the manner in which people from all walks of life view and interpret and are affected by a singular work. Highly recommended.
"A collection of essays from contributors as diverse as Pulitzer-Prize-winning novelist Jhumpa Lahiri and actor John Turturro contemplates a single work of art notable for its scope and meditation on interconnectivity." (Dec 2011 B&N Review)
