Interesting study of fantasy, for its time (1976), though I felt some of Irwins views are now outdated.

I liked his approach to fantasy through rhetorics, language and the proposed thesis that fantasy operates solely through the wit of the author, and the reader agreeing to participating in this intellectual play.

Do however disagree with his assertion that fantasy literature will never be more than a diversion, a sort of "cleansing of the palate" for other types of literature. In my opinion, the fantastic has more value than that.
