This is my second read of this book after about 20 years. Fr. “Al-bear’s” book should be a cult classic of spirituality, incorporating the wisdom of St. Francis and Thomas Merton. The imagery of “swimming in the heart of the sun” while saying the Lord’s Prayer is so powerful. It helps me focus on the individual lines of the prayer. Praise - Our Daily Bread - Forgiveness - Temptation. Carrying my cross during this difficult time. This book helps you reflect on your “true self” and provides the framework of moving towards that true self from the “false self” that is influenced and created by the world around us.

This is not so much about the Lord`s prayer but about what is the Christian life. But then what is prayer for, but to connect with God that we may live a life in His love to the praise of His glory. On reading this book it really hit me that for me prayer had become a ritual and not a vital act of communication. So for me the book was not so much "Discovering the Lord`s> Prayer" but discovering prayer and what a religious poser I am.

Offers an interesting and enriching frame for exploring the Lord's Prayer, namely Merton's "true/false self" dichotomy. Makes some fairly predictable points, and often teaches through anecdotes, so that meant I skimmed a good bit.
