FIVE VALUABLE INSIGHTS ABOUT PSALM 119

1. Psalm 119 is an acrostic poem. The verses of each stanza begin with the same letter of each of the Hebrew alphabet, such as “Aleph,” “Beth,” “Gimel,” and so on. You will find these designations only in the original text. Some bible version such as the NIV use this lettering system to lend toward being as close to the original text as possible. You will find that there are 22 stanzas or sections, equal to 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet, with 8 verses each, and a total of 176 verses.

2. The author of Psalm 119 is unknown but some scholars suggest that Ezra the priest, may have written it at the time the temple was being rebuilt. Though the life of Ezra may not be the most well known in the Bible, he was extremely important and greatly used by God at a time in history when the Israelites desperately needed a faithful, strong leader. His life proved to be a life for one to follow and his godly example is still very relevant for our lives today.

3. Nearly every verse of Psalm 119 mentions the manifestation of God’s Word in some way or fashion through out the Psalm. You will read of His “word,” “ways,” “statutes,” “decrees,” “law,” “precepts,” “commands,” or “promise” – in some way in nearly all of the verses.

4. Psalm 119 has a unique status in the bible as being the longest chapter of the Bible Bible scholars through history have debated as to whether Psalm 117 or 118 is the center chapter of the entire Bible. Some say the Bible consists of 594 chapters up to Psalm 117 and 594 chapters from Psalm 119 on, with chapter 118 being the center. However it is divided up you will find that reading of Psalm 119 gives one insight into the significant uniqueness and spiritual ideals in the Bible which we would be wise to study it carefully.

5. The fundamental message of Psalm 119 will guide your focus on to the truth of God’s Word. Psalm 119 has encouraged many in every generation to stay close and focused on the Word of God no matter what swirls around us in this world. It will help you develop that mindset of living in the freedom and knowledge of God’s ways, obeying His law above all else, and keeping in step with His commandments is the only way to truly live wise, strong lives.

I pray as your go forth in this 22 day devotional that you are blessed in a manner that inspires to take what you are reading into deep reflection as you consider the attributes of God’s very character which you learn of through the reading of this word.
