This books lists a week by week progression of what is happening developmentally with baby and what other female doctors experienced with their pregnancies. My pregnancy week rolled over on Tuesday and I woke up every week excited to read about the new changes - a real pick-me-up when the going was tough!
After the short science of what is happening there are stories and advice. While some are informative, others are pretty entertaining. It was reassuring to read that even doctors can be total nitwits about pregnancy related things.

I was trying to think of something different for a friend's baby shower and I found it in this book. Having adopted my two children, I really didn't know much about the pregnancy experience but I learned a lot myself just from reading it. The chapters are divided up by weeks of pregnancy so you learn something about your baby at each stage. Plus the experiences of the Doctor-Mom's is extremely helpful for new moms especially.
The Mommy MD books are great because if you don't have a lot of time to spare, and what Mom or Mom-to-Be does, you can read a chapter in a few minutes or search for exactly what you are looking for. Of course, you could just give diapers or a new outfit, but I think this book would be valued and appreciated in the long run.p

Some doctors are mommies too. They go through the same experiences and have to make the same choices as you and I. So, what about a book that is full of tips and advice about pregnancy from more than 60 moms who are also doctors?
The Mommy MD Guide to Pregnancy and Birth, written by Rallie McAllister and Jennifer Bright Reich, takes you step by step through your pregnancy, starting from the first week all the way to the birth of your baby. Organized in chronological order, you follow along by how many weeks pregnant you are. It’s fun to sit down each week and read about your baby’s size, development, and what you may be going through.
Each week, you’ll read new and timely information that will help you along in your pregnancy, as well as health tips from author and doctor, Rallie McAllister. Rallie is well qualified to provide you with trustworthy pregnancy information. She is a board-certified family physician and has a weekly health column that is published in more than 30 newspapers.
Scattered throughout the book are quotes – backing Rallie’s medical advice – taken from 60 moms (who are also physicians) about their challenges, choices, and advice about pregnancy and birth. They offer an insight into the realities of motherhood, and had me saying, “I guess I’m not the only one!”
There is something in this book for everyone. The medical information is not overly technical or biased, so while it’s not a book for in-depth research on medical choices, I appreciate that it’s something that every pregnant mother can read, whether you give birth with a midwife or with a doctor.
I especially like the “recommended product” and “when to call your doctor or midwife” features that correspond with each week of pregnancy. Rallie and Jennifer recommend products that you may consider purchasing and Rallie lets you know when to worry, and when you should contact your care provider.
This is a light and simple read during each stage of your pregnancy, without all the added medical drama and scary scenarios. This book easily replaces other “week by week” pregnancy books, and with more authority, since it’s full of real-life experiences and advice from “Mommy MD’s”.

This book is packed with great information for new parents. It outlines each week of pregnancy, what is happening in the womb and how MD Mothers handled the many decisions of pregnancy, from where the kids will sleep to how to choose the right doctor to attend your delivery.
One thing they include in every chapter that I just love is “Justification for a Celebration.” This section talks about what is going well with your pregnancy and why you should celebrate. In the book I used during my pregnancy, they never really talk about what is going well and encourage celebration. Most of the text is about what isn’t working and what you can or can not do about it. “Justification for a Celebration” is a refreshing segment in each chapter The Mommy MD Guides.
The segments are broken up with anecdotes and stories, often humorous, about how the Mommy MD’s handled the different scenarios during their pregnancy from surviving Hurricane Katrina to what it is like to carry twins and everything in between. It’s great for the newly pregnant mom and offers, a fun and enjoyable read to reflect on.
This book is filled with fun and useful information for parents who want to know the real deal about pregnancy. I would recommend this book to anyone going through pregnancy for the first time, the last time or if they are growing a big family. You won’t find more helpful information anywhere else.

December 18, 2014Very different accounts of pregnancy and birth from doctors of all sorts. Kinda cool idea for a different sort of "Guide to Pregnancy" to include on every mother's shelf.
