Don't get me wrong. I love a good unabridged dictionary and this one is quite good. However, for translation purposes I found myself relying more heavily on my Harper Collins German College Dictionary or even the Langenscheidt Pocket Dictionary just to get a quick jist of a word or phrase. If more careful parsing was required, then and only then would I bring out the "big gun" and refer to the unabridged. Much of the time an unabridged dictionary just gives you too much information. Having said that, what you really want an unabridged dictionary for is to get into as many of the nuanced meanings of a word by examining all of its uses and related phrases and terms. The Collins definitely satisfies on that account and it's fascinating to read through the entries to to gain a deeper understanding of a word or phrase. The Language in Use section in the center is especially useful for figuring out idiomatic expressions and cultural conventions surrounding the use of things such as salutations in business letters, etc. Since I never took "introduction to German", but jumped right into a graduate level German for Reading course, I found that section particularly helpful.
