December 21st, 2012. Will it be the end of the world? A new dawn for human civilization? Or are the predictions and prophecies all based on a series of misinterpretations, coincidences, and elaborate hoaxes? In this illustrated and comprehensive look at the science, history, legends, and recent discoveries surrounding the end of the Mayan Long Count calendar, author Melissa Rossi unravels fact from fiction in an effort to determine what's actually in store for humanity. Featuring an introduction by scholar Bruce Scofield, this is an invaluable handbook for anyone who has ever been fascinated by (or afraid of) the mystery of 2012.
I've already read several books about 2012. I decided to read this one because it was very short. I'm glad I did. Decoding 2012 provides a brief (yet surprisingly comprehensive) overview and summary of every major thought or belief connected to that year. The author goes into just the right amount of detail about ancient Mayan calendars, new age mystics, and modern science. Published in 2010, Decoding 2012 is newer than most other 2012 books, and has more up-to-date scientific information. What I like most about studying 2012 is how an emphasis on artifacts from ancient Mesoamerica is combined with findings of modern science. It is a rare topic that successfully brings together two seemingly opposed viewpoints (ancient religion and modern science) which support a similar conclusion (i.e., the world will soon undergo - or is already starting to undergo - a massive transformation). Even if you are a skeptic, you have to admit at this point that several, totally separate sources of information (the ancient Maya, the Bible, modern science, etc.) all predict that Era 2012 (including the following decade or two) will involve a global change, probably involving mass destruction, that will transform the planet. If a huge transformation doesn't happen within several years of the predicted date, it would seem that neither scientific nor religious prognostication can be trusted. On the other hand, if something global does happen, it would be a milestone in the long-awaited reconciliation of the two greatest opposing viewpoints in history.
Lots of talk about the world ending on 12-21-2012... Is it real? That's what most people want to know... For me, the book didn't get interesting until the end. The first 2/3'rds or so of the book is filled with history and Mayan info.
Basically, that is the end of the Mayan calendar, but it also coincides with the expected "solar maximum" when sunspots, flares and solar winds peak. We have created a large "hole" in the magnetoshphere that will allow this increased solar activity to come right through. This can easily take out satellites and transformers. If the transformers blow, the electrical supply will be cut off to the effected areas. Also, a polar reversal may happen which can create all kinds of havoc!
The technology is available to be able to set off earthquakes, volcanoes and also alter the climate, using electromagnetic waves. We also have HAARP in Alaska that can do similar things and more!
The book also states that we can actually create the end of the world as a self-fulfilling prophecy. "scientific studies show that our intentions can shape our reality"
Definitely recommended for history buffs or anyone interested in the Mayan civilization.
Concise history of the 2012 movement with a heavy emphasis on the Mayan Calendar. I would recommend the title The Everything Guide to 2012 by Mark Heley for those interested in the topic over this book.
