Simon Mouse is a slowpoke. He lags behind his mother and his sister, Lucy, as they walk to their grandmother's house. Along the way, Simon falls behind and is separated from his mother and sister and winds up having an adventure all his own.
Crosby Barbara Newell Bonsall, b. Jan. 2, 1921; d. Jan. 10, 1995 was an American artist and children's book author and illustrator. She wrote and illustrated more than 40 children's books.

This was my favorite book as a toddler. I made everyone in my family read it to me a million times. I can still remember most of the lines such as "Children! said Mrs. Mouse". I think it does a genuine portrayal of sibling rivalry and the special relationship kids have with their grandparents. Years ago, I saw a copy of it on Ebay and had to buy it. My original was missing a cover and a few pages like a well loved doll.
My absolute favorite as a child. I loved the interaction, and the rhyming verses. Simon of course, made it to Grams first...my word said the bird, oh pish said the fish, what luck said the duck. classic.

I lost my awesome, childhood book that I read and I memorized most of it when I was 7&8 years old. I wish I could afford 10 brand new books of "Hurry Up Slowpoke," so I could have a copy, and my 9 Grandchildren could each have a copy, and it would mean a lot for the books to be autographed with name plates of the wonderful Author Crosby Barbara Newell Bonsall. Every adult and every child, teen, should read this book. It would make a great play on stage. I would love to hear from the Author, even if I couldn't receive the 9 autographed books with name plates. They have to be new books. In the meantime, I will try and buy the books myself. I will be turning 70 on September 25th of this year. I am also disabled with a lot of ailments, so I don't know how many more years of living that I will have left. Even if I could be gifted one book that I love so much, with a name plate with an autograph of the great Author, I would be so happy. I would love to hear from her, and get some tips on how to write children books. I have been interested in poetry and children's stories since I was 7 or 8. I wish I had an electric typewriter like I used to have and if not electric, a manual one. I can type better with the keys close to each other. I'll look on Amazon or at Staples, online. I want so much to send out some of my poems, so I can finally be considered a published Author. I hope I can be inspired by "Hurry Up Slowpoke." The book that probably inspired me to want to write when I was 7 or 8 years old. We all start someplace. I will give a review once I read the book again.
This was the first book I ever read completely on my own. To this day, over sixty years later, I recall where I was, what I saw when I looked up from the book, and how sorry I was to have it end... until I realized the book was mine and I could read it as many times as I wanted. I bought it for my children and saved that copy for my grandchildren. Yeah, it's that good.
This was my very first book. My mom got it for me when I was around 6 or 7. I would read it almost everyday. I still have my original copy. I bought a new (or fairly new) for my grandson parker. I read it again not too long ago to him as a bed time story. I highly recommend it.
The story is kinda meh -- Simon is a dawdler and eventually gets lost. He finds his sister's hat and rather than worry about her, he uses it as a boat to get to his grandmother's house before them! I suppose he learns his lesson. I also hope he told Mrs. Mouse and Lucy that they should just each ride their hats across the pond next time. The illustrations are pretty cute. Grandmother Mouse lives in a mushroom-shaped house.
