Grace Greylock Niles' classic Bog-Trotting for Orchids opens a view into the world of a female student of nature, and her love for the flora and fauna of the Northeast. Focusing on her search for orchids in the bogs of Vermont, it offers a look back (over a century) at the history and natural history of this well-known region, and the earlier poetry and prose that influenced her.
A rather amazing but highly local book about a fearless woman botanist exploring the bogs and surroundings of Pownal, Vermont as well as Williamstown and North Adams, Massachusetts in the 1902-1903, all on horse and buggy. This is then an excellent description, species specific, to what was to be found in the natural areas at that time, and is a very fun read. What is needed is an annotated edition of this book with maps and updated nomenclature for the plants. (I hope someone will do this!).
