Shows and describes ten houses Wright designed for moderate cost and modern features that include carports, open living spaces, walls of windows, and patios that open to the outdoors
Brief text and photography of important Usonian homes. I was left with wanting more detailed information of this approach to home construction. A brief primer which whets a persons appetite.
Beautiful photos of a variety of 140 Usonian homes that Wright built beginning in 1936. The term Usonian refers to residents of a culturally reformed "United States of North America." Wright made low cost, nature-oriented communities that were small but spacious, one story horizontal plans, flat roofs, with three primary areas: open kitchens with permanent dining space, living/entertaining space with fireplace centrally located in the home and small bedrooms; also a carport, window walls and patio that could open up the back of the home to the south side of their property. Materials most commonly used: wood (for ceiling and shelving), brick inside and out, red concrete flooring and glass. If you have the opportunity to see one of these homes, you must go. It is something you have to experience.
A good book about Frank Lloyd Wright's well-meaning intentions behind his Usonian Houses. However, as the series title says, this is Frank Lloyd Wright At A Glance. If you need a quick reference or refresher this is good, otherwise steer toward a more comprehensive Usonian book.
