A neat little book about the development of the smock-frock in England and Wales in the 18th, 19th, and 20th century. The garment which today is associated with fussy little girls' dresses was once exclusively a workingman's shirt, a large white overgown worn over clothes when doing farm work. The patterns, smocking, and embroidery were all distinctive, and particularly fine ones were worn on special occasions.
