Giorgio Gomelsky was at the centre of the counterculture in 60s’ London and 70s’ Paris before running a studio for avant-garde musicians in New York. He was the original manager of the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds in London, then managed the French supergroup Magma and developed the career of Gong. Dumaurier recounts his friend Gomelsky’s love of life, his dynamism, and the creativity that made him “push the envelope”. With a keen eye for talent, Gomelsky’s ideas helped shape the rock music we know and love today – acting as a catalyst for change and innovation.
This is a biography of an entrepreneur at the early beginnings of the British Invasion of the 1960s. He was the first manager of the Rollin' Stones (later Rolling Stones) and the quintessential rock group The Yardbirds with both Beck and Clapton. But he always got pushed out of the way by better connected managers and record labels.
In the seventies he bought a townhouse in New York and turned it into a performance space. The basement and first floor were set up as performance and recording areas, the second floor was the business and the top floor was his home. For years old and new friends came and went as they were guided by Giorgio on their way to stardom or obscurity.
The book is a love letter to Giorgio of a friend of over thirty-five years with reminisces of people who dealt with Giorgio over the years.
This was a great read - a fascinating biography on the original manager of the Rolling Stones and the yardbirds. Gomelsky did so much for the rock n roll era - he kicked off the careers of so many bands of the sixties London scene. Would highly recommend!
A must read if you are a fan of rock music and want to learn about a less known but very important person who was the manger of Yadbirds and Rolling Stones. Highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
