This book provides a convincing capsule version of Peter Carey's novel, as well as an insight into the presentation of a screenplay for popular consumption. Many lines in the subtext (not accurate to call them 'stage directions' here, but you follow my drift) seem to come from the novel, given the psychological detail which a film viewer will have to sense from the acting and direction. The changed ending makes sense to a degree in practical terms - the film had to end within a reasonable length of time without feeling rushed - but changes the view of the characters significantly.
