In the Shurangama Sutra, the Buddha explains to one of his disciples, Ananda, the nature of mind, matter and awareness. He also explains the methods of practice and the results of practice, including stages of attainment and levels of rebirth. In this volume, the fifth of eight volumes, 25 sages in the Buddha's assembly explain the method they used to reach enlightenment. Manjushri Bodhisattva and Kuan Yin Boddhisattva use the method of returning the hearing to listen to the self-nature. They explain that this is the easiest method of cultivation for living beings to quickly attain enlightenment.
