It is a simple and entertaining story about the love between a foreigner and a local girl (Geisha). The encounter between two cultures and a portrait of Japan, a country that was entering in a new stage with a declining warrior caste with weak shoguns and no authority.

I read a translation of this book in Finnish. According to back cover text I was expecting more about O-Kita's background but the story was about Daniel and his experiences in Japan
