Seduction Of The Innocent Collection - Part 14: True Crime Comics V1 #2: The Comics That Changed America

Rate this book
In 1954 Dr. Frederick Wertham produced a book which claimed that comic books were responsible for a large part of the social ills associated with modern 20th Century youth. His book was widely publicized, and resulted in Congressional hearings which threatened to bring the comic industry to its knees. In response the comic companies voluntarily subjected themselves to censorship in the form of the Comics Code Authority, an organization whose supposed purpose was to protect American youth, but who in fact inhibited free speech and squelched ideas and creativity. Comics would not recover for many, many years.

Each of the books in this collection were cited in Seduction Of The Innocent as in some way damaging to the fabric of our lives. Many of the complaints are, at best, shakey. Because of their impact on the next generation, each of these books is an important part of comics history and cultural history.

Retro Comic Reprints is presenting all of the public domain (legal to publish) comics which formed part of Dr. Wertham's argument. You can decide for yourself whether he had any valid points.
