A Good paperback copy. Creasing and edge/corner wear to wraps. Gilt design on cover and spine. Pages curling slightly at corners. Otherwise pages are clean and bright, the binding tight. A scarce copy of this out-of-print
Edward E. Rehmus—who published as E.E. Rehmus while known within San Francisco Regional Mensa and the Prometheus Society simply as Ed Rehmus—was an occultist, linguist, Egyptologist, translator, and illustrator.
The original subtitle was "An Apocalyptic Cyclopaedia of Advanced M/magic(k)al Arts and Alternate Meanings".
It's an occult reference. Three random entries: Cathari; Existentialism; Magician, The.
...uh, that was a weird experiment: I jsut turned to "random" pages and selected random entries and all three are extremely relevant to my interests. ...but it turns out, the book favored those pages because I had them open in the past. Simple physics - - - MAYBE!
This is one of those books that, when you read one entry, it contains a word or two you'd have to (or want to) go and look up, and so on; which makes it addictive.
It's as much a collection of opinions and commentaries as it is reference, perhaps moreso. Kind of a front-porch style dictionary. So if you want a crisp reference, this ain't it. And yet, his entry for Existentialism reads "Compare the following two dictionary definitions." And cites Funk & Wagnall 1947 and Webster 1966. Reading this book definitely increases wisdom (and thus suffering?).
The Magician's Dictionary is sort of a miniature Man, Myth & Magic written by someone who is part practitioner and part anthropologist.
A reasonable sized compendium of magic(k)al terms and phrases, which sometimes feels more like a puzzle book than the clear reference document it calls itself. I guess I will just have to keep studying and reading. :)
