Somebody Stole the Cornbread from My Dressing answers the "what to serve" question for anyone who is planning a special occasion - or just dinner. Combining great ingredients that can be found at every grocery store with tons of laughs, Susanne Reed and Elizabeth Heiskell give readers ideas for hosting the perfect tailgate, bridal shower, baby shower, Thanksgiving, New Year's Eve, and more.
I heard Susanne Reed speak at the Southern Festival of Books in Nashville a couple of years before I finally got around to checking this book out of the library. I had tried to buy it the day she spoke but it had sold out. This is much more than a recipe book. Susanne's stories that go along with the recipes are humorous. I will say, however, that although the narrative is funny, it comes across much better in person. At the Festival, she had everyone in stitches. Susanne is a southerner transplanted to the north and the book is a result of that. It would make a nice gift book.
This was a Christmas present. While I certainly enjoyed the recipes, the writing falls into that same annoying rut as the Gayden Metcalfe books that assume that all Southerners (and certainly all Mississippians) are Delta debs, frequenting League meetings and cotillions and occasionally getting the vapors. "Hilarious Comparisons" is probably a step too far as well - I might have chuckled...silently...once.
