Abercrombie Lewker è un capocomico londinese non più giovanissimo con qualche nebuloso passato nei servizi segreti durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Proprio quando decide di andare in vacanza a Zermatt, ai piedi del Cervino, riceve la visita del suo ex capo che gli chiede di indagare, discretamente, su Leon Jacot, amico Abercrombie durante la guerra e ora enigmantico uomo politico in Francia.

Classico giallo inglese "alla camera chiusa" che segue le orme dei vari Conan Doyle,Christie,Ellery Quinn,ecc. Di per se il giallo scorre bene e non mi stupirebbe se un lettore smaliziato nel genere riuscisse a risolvere l'enigma ben prima del teatrale epilogo. Le particolarità che mi hanno fatto apprezzare il volume sono state le descrizioni del Cervino e degli ambienti limitrofi, mai banali, mai ridondanti e inserite nei punti giusti del volume e soprattutto la caratterizzazione del protagonista, l'attore e geniale detective dilettante (come piace definirsi) Abercrombie Lewker, che a fine volume entrerà nel cuore dei lettori, non fosse altro per le citazioni a Shakespeare a cui ogni tanto si lascia andare.
Valutazione: 6,5/10
a chi lo consiglio?agli amanti delle montagne, a chi vuol passare un po' di tempo con una lettura non troppo impegnativa ambientata in un posto quasi fiabesco come le località ai piedi del Cervino degli anni '50.

Not so impressive in my opinion. The murderer was quite predictable owing to the way the story was moving in and the motive of the murder. Could have been written in much more interesting way.

Theatrical manager Abercrombie (Filthy) Lewker is due a vacation, which he plans to spend mountain-climbing, when British intelligence asks him to do a little errand while in Switzerland. A colleague from his war years is now starting a political party in France, but the British are not sure of what his politics are--and Lewker is supposed to sound him out. Unfortunately, his body is found on the glacier, and only Lewker realizes at first that he's been murdered.
