WIlliam Barclay was a Scottish author, radio and television presenter, Church of Scotland minister, and Professor of Divinity and Biblical Criticism at the University of Glasgow. He wrote a popular set of Bible commentaries on the New Testament that sold 1.5 million copies.
Like his other "Plain man" books he doesn't fully live up to the title in that he was not a particularly "Plain Man" himself (despite his self-description in his memoir as having a "second-class mind") nor, despite being a first class communicator, does he fully speak into the world of the "Plain Man" with his citations of Voltaire, obscure Jewish Rabbis and miscellaneous classical philosophers and poets. But it may be dated and idiosyncratic in style, but like the prayer on which it comments, William Barclay's slim volume packs a lot into a relatively few words.
