Residents of and visitors to Broward County might not realize how many haunting tales are connected to the many popular beaches, roadways and destinations here. What really happened to six aircraft that went missing in what might be one corner of the Devil's Triangle? Does a shape-shifting panther man lurk in the wild places off the Dixie Highway? Just how many startling specters have appeared over the years at the county's restaurants, inns and buildings? Authors Dorothy Salvo Davis and W.C. Madden reveal these stories and more in Ghosts and Mysteries of Broward County.
Dorothy Salvo Davis spent her earliest years in New England and moved to South Florida when still a child. Raised in an Italian American family, Davis is very open minded and Ft. lauderdale's many cultures are reflected in her writing. Her first book, "Ghost Stories of White County" set her on a path to document the paranormal. Currently she is promoting, "Haunted Lafayette" well she works on her next books, "Broward County Florida Haunts" and "Indiana's Paranormal Encounters". A true love for history, Davis claims she feels that it is important to remember those who created the world we live in as it is today. When researching the history of a paranormal site, she does so with respect for the locations past. She resides in Indiana and enjoys researching the paranormal and events of those who lived long ago. Her favorite Author is Edgar Allen Poe and she finds a kindred spirit in his poetry.
My parents own a condo in Pompano Beach in Broward County and it was fun to hear about some ghost stories in areas I have visited. I live in New Jersey myself, and have had the pleasure of taking some walking ghost tours around nearby towns. This book would improve with a little editing...there were a few poor word choices (using obliviously instead of obviously twice for example) and several run-on sentences. I found the pictures included to enhance the reading experience. Sometimes, ghost stories can be a little choppy to read because you are trying to combine historical facts, personal testimony, and legends about the area. All in all, a quick and fun read!
Some of the stories were interesting, especially the more historic locations. However, most of the stories read like they were transcribed from a conversation of what someone remembered to be their paranormal experience. Stream of consciousness thoughts. There were many spelling errors throughout, and there seemed to be little to no editing for content or clarity. Additionally, many of the pictures were blurry, taken on an angle, or cropped poorly, and perhaps were taken from a moving vehicle. I was surprised, considering one of the authors says he has written 30 books and 100 articles.
I was hoping for more researched and well written stories.
Enjoyed this book very much! I live several hours from Broward County, but many years ago was down in that area. Saw many interesting places. I would enjoy going back and seeing some of the haunted locations, but age and finances say no to that. So I know I can visit many different historical and haunted places through these wonderfully written books. It's like being there!
I bought this and a few other books for my mother. She is not a reader, so I jump to get her books when she does request it. But I got to read it as well. It was very interesting as a few of the houses listed were sites we had just seen on a ghost tour the day prior. Like most similar books I wish these had been longer and gone into more depth with each of the stories.
I confess I am a junkie of this type of book. The stories fascinate me. I don't go to horror movies, can't they give me nightmares, but something about the reality of these stories keep me coming back. Especially this time of year. These were fun stories, especially since I just moved to the area and know where some of the locations are. You don't have to believe to enjoy, but it is a lot more fun if you have an open mind.
Loved this book! Great book for escaping and exploring the paranormal. Wonderful speaker Dorothy Salvo Davis is your lucky enough to hear one of her lectures!
