A renowned composer, Mascagni wrote fifteen operas as well as numerous other works, and was highly acclaimed in his lifetime. He toured the world from his native Italy, including North and South America, to conduct and support his works in performance. Mascagni is still well regarded in Italy for his late Romantic, deeply chromatic melodies, with his one-act opera "L'amico Fritz" and his Orientalist work "Iris" receiving semi-regular performances.
In the wider world in the 21st century, Mascagni is primarily known for a single work, the one-act opera "Cavalleria rusticana" (The Rustic Chivalry). The story of a village love affair that ends in tragedy is often paired with Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci" as a double bill. The opera was filmed in 1982, directed by Franco Zeffirelli and starring Placido Domingo and Elena Obraztsova, and features in "The Godfather Part III".
A well written piece of opera, short and sweet. I have sung in this opera twice, and even though one show was quite traumatic, the music remains ever new and effective.
