This cute little 1998 paperback is not only a celebration of "cattitude", but a decent parody of self-help books. The 1990s was absolutely saturated with self-help books ... or so it seemed. The advice from a cat named Miss Behavin' does gave some obligatory cute cat references, but also sometimes has some really great advice, such as
Nap ON the dryer, not in the dryer.
Can't argue with that.
It's not a very funny book, but it is surprisingly comforting. It does encourage you to be yourself, which is a message people say but don't really mean. I think a cat would really mean it.
The soft black and white illustrations are okay, but not exactly my cup of nip. Miss Behavin' is drawn not exactly like a cartoon, but not very realistically, either. I think the artist may have been inspired by Bernard Kliban. I appreciate that she tries to draw cats her own way; just seems very stiff to me.
There is also a section of cat poetry, which doesn't quite work, except for one limerick.
