These poems, cast as monologues and diary entries, describe the journey of an imaginary family traveling from Kentucky to Oregon in 1852. The family consists Gabriel Watkins Clay (Gabe), a farmer; Sarah, teacher, pianist and Gabe's wife; Their daughters Abigail van Buven Clay, 16 and Nancy Elizabeth Clay, 13; Also their son, Charlie, 2 1/2. We also briefly meet other family members, hired hands, friends and neighbors in Kentucky, and a cast of characters met along the way.
