James Herriot meets Jeff Foxworthy in the real-life adventures of a traveling horse doctor.
Climb into the truck alongside large animal vet Dr. Madison Seamans and race to the aid of horses with wounds, stomach aches, allergies, and bizarre behaviors, as well as those in severe physical distress. Quite by accident, you’ll find yourself familiar with and understanding common equine medical problems and how they are diagnosed and treated, all while marveling at the remarkable situations a country veterinarian can find himself in. Playful yet serious, honest yet tongue-in-cheek, this wonderfully written book is an up-close look at a well-lived rural life that is about as authentic as America gets. No one who cares a whit for the animal kingdom, and the humans who dare enter it, will be disappointed.
I enjoyed this book immensely! The stories are told in a way that reminded me of James Harriet, with a humorous and sarcastic twist! They're honest, down to earth experiences of an actual equine vet, who also has to deal with crazy horse people, lol. The knowledge I picked up will definitely benefit me in the future. I recommend this book to anyone who loves animals at all, but especially to us crazy horse people!
This book is VERY good. I especially liked that I was written first and foremost by a horse lover, second by a darn good veterinarian! The detailed diagnosis and treatments were really good, I love reading that stuff. Some folks don’t but I do. There were also some great quotes. Some of which I saved to use again later. Thank you Mr. Madison!

This Doc is funny!
My daughter, brought me three new vastly different books to peruse – if I thought they looked interesting to read, I was welcomed to – just return them. Last night I read a bit from the back covers, a paragraph here and there and I chose Never Trust A Sneaky Pony because of the title and the artwork and the writing, of course. It is written by a mostly horse veterinarian now practicing in New Mexico. I’ve never been on a horse and wasn’t sure I’d enjoy it, but because of the writing decided to give it a go.
Madison Seamans, MS, DVM, tells the story of his early life pursuing a veterinarian degree, his dedication to the field and funny college stories with good friends. Finally, he graduates and starts his practice. First in California, I think. He has practiced mostly in the Southwest of the country.
If you are interested in how horses’ bodies work, you’ll find out by reading this book. If you’re entertained by working with the public stories and with heart felt situations, or truly outrageously deranged wild laughter: laughing until you have the hiccups, this is a book for you.
Oh my, oh my, I have not laughed this hard since a friend back forty years ago took me to a bar/comedy club in a strip mall off of Independence Blvd in Virginia Beach. That very young comedian was Jay Leno. He was an artist, a true master of a two-hour entertainment for young, old, sailors, men and women in suits, and everyone in-between. He’d slowly introduce you to a story, slowly develop characters and then would weave in the funniest stories I’d ever heard. Just clean funny true-life stories. Everyone in the audience of that small venue was almost rolling in the isles. We all laughed until we couldn’t. My stomach, my sides and my cheeks ached the next day.
That is how much I laughed last night when Madison Seamans wove his subtle, caring, stories: some with an ending that made me laugh until tears ran down my face. I cannot remember laughing like that for so many years. It was cathartic.
This book should definitely be a best seller because I can’t think of one person I know who would not enjoy it. I mean Really Enjoy It.
Sort of like you wish your horse vet or human doctor would explain things. For once this guy has a chapter which he follows up with diagnosis and used current terms as well as older ones. I do not have much knowledge on horses. This book really helped me to understand their care.
I enjoyed this well written book, had a few chuckles, and learned a little in the process. It’s presented in bite size chapters so it’s easy to put down and pick back up. Pick up a copy for yourself or a friend!
Really enjoyed this audiobook. I would have loved some more follow up on a few of the patients (although probably not possible, I know)! Dr. Madison seems like a wonderful and dedicated vet!
