Photographer, musician, frequent traveler, and world citizen Paul Otteson passes along the lessons he's learned through many years of packbacking. Otteson shows what resources to have on hand, how to budget ahead of time, what to pack and why, and more. 75 b & w photographs. 12 maps.
Slightly outdated now but still comprehensive and very useful. The internal experience advice I found to be extremely relevant. It's something inevitable you will experience but it is not something a guide book will inform you about. It was an honest book that doesn't shy from the unpleasant aspects of travel by sticking to political correctness which I appreciated. The book effectively places you in the relative context of a traveler in relation to the world and places you will visit.
This is the definitive book on traveling freely through the world. My copy is from 1996, but the philosophy of travel, discovery, and mystery have not, and will never, change. The author does a great job of describing this feeling. Independent travel can change you forever; this book helps you plan the trip that will get you there.
