His Partner's Widow...

When intruders ransacked his dead partner's home, undercover cop Zach Stone knew where his duty lay. Widowed Elizabeth Healy and her baby daughter needed to be taken to safety. Then Zach would return - alone, as always - and track down the criminals.

But when a blizzard trapped Zach and Elizabeth at an inn together, Zach realized that despite the cold outside, Elizabeth was threatening him with a warmth he'd never known....

Zach's overbearing, take-charge attitude had rubbed Elizabeth all wrong. Now she was discovering that beneath his rough, street-smart exterior lurked a tender heart. But every time she reached out, he retreated behind a wall of stone. Could she ever teach him that, maybe this time, love had come to stay?

This was a nice read. I liked reading about a heroine who didn't feel guilt over moving on and instead like a normal person had started dating again. Her cop husband was murdered and the hero was his partner. When her house is ransacked her in-laws want her to come live with them, something that prickles the heroine because she has fought hard for her independence (her parents are loving but wanted to cosset her). The hero is the escort for her and her daughter. The hero is a well-known cop who doesn't do any ties since he didn't have a childhood filled with love. Frankly he can take the attraction between him and the heroine but not the emotional bond he feels with her and her daughter. It was refreshing reading about a heroine who wasn't scared of the attraction between her and the hero and was willing to explore it. It was the hero who ran scared of what she made him feel. I liked seeing the hero with her daughter too. Another nice oldie.
