Periodontology is a specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the study of the diseases and conditions affecting the supporting structures of the teeth. These supporting tissues are termed as periodontium. They include alveolar bone, gingiva, periodontal ligament and cementum. Periodontology involves the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of periodontal diseases and the placement of dental implants. Anatomically, the gingivae are broadly categorized into three categories. These are free gingiva, attached gingiva and interdental gingivap. Periodontal therapy is broadly classified into 4 phases. These are disease control phase, surgical phase, restorative phase and maintenance phase. Dental implants are surgical fixtures which are placed on the jawbone. Over a period of a few months, they are allowed to fuse with the bone. This book studies, analyses and upholds the pillars of periodontology and its utmost significance in modern times. It traces the progress of this field and highlights some of its key concepts. This book attempts to assist those with a goal of delving into the field of periodontology.
