While Paramahansa Yogananda may have been better known, Anandamurti was arguably the twentieth century's most interesting and controversial spiritual figure. Considered by some to be a social revolutionary with secret intentions of overthrowing the Indian government and by others to be a powerful Tantric with supernatural powers, Anandamurti kept himself scrupulously hidden from the public eye throughout his lifetime. His only interaction with the public was through Ananda Marga, the spiritual and service organization he founded in 1955, and its thousands of orange-robed monks who by the late 1960s had become so ubiquitous in northern India that they began drawing daily mention in the press and literature of the time. While Ananda Marga gained great notoriety, Anandamurti himself remained a mysterious figure in India until his death in 1990. Based on the oral histories of his disciples, colleagues, and family, The Jamalpur Years unveils a remarkable portrait of this often misunderstood saint and social thinker. Rather than being an academic study of one man's life, Anandamurti is primarily a collection of devotional and mystical stories set in a biographical framework that provides the reader with a portal into the magical world of Indian mysticism, yoga, and Tantra. "A fascinating story. Devashish has risen to the challenge of capturing this extraordinary life with grace and eloquence. I highly recommend it." -- Dada Nabhaniilananda, Meditation teacher and author of Close Your Eyes and Open Your Mind
Devashish is the author of six novels and two works of non-fiction that explore themes of spiritual growth and social change. He is an avid meditator, a yoga teacher, and a musician who divides his time between Puerto Rico and Brazil.
Well compiled biography of arguably one of the greatest spiritualist/philosopher/social reformer/linguist of our times. His miraculous stories told by those who were were lucky enough to experience him in person.
As a new Margi it was truly inspiring to read the stories about the person who started this whole movement and all the philosophies and teachings that are part of it. I must admit I wept a tear when I finished this book, it deepened my love for this work, which I want to help carry out in this world.
This is the most inspiring book I've ever read. I can open Devashish's formidable telling of the life of Shrii Shrii Anandamurti to any page and read stories, quotes, and guidance that give me resolve to work for the upliftment of humanity and, of course, to meditate with as much focus and sincerity as I can muster.
Sin duda alguna este libro abre la mente e invita a la devocion, prabhat ranjar sarkar dejo un gran legado y una misión gigante a realizar para el bienestar de toda la humanidad.
