I learned quite a bit about the author of the well-known book "The Yearling." Mrs. Rawlings spent a large part of her life in northern Florida in the late nineteenth century and the first two decades of the twentieth century. By living and writing amongst the native "Crackers," she gradually was accepted in their community. She wrote many short stories set in the area; her work was edited by the legendary Maxwell Perkins. My local library has a book of her letters, many of which were written to Perkins.
Two years ago, my husband and I stopped at a park near Ocala, Fla. where we found an historical marker about the life of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings in that part of the state. Unfortunately, we couldn't linger because of the voracious mosquitoes, one of the critters discussed in her stories and books.
