This book has a great deal of information regarding our hormones. I enjoyed reading it and I thought the science was sound. The author did seem to be in favor of prescription medications rather than a natural solution.

the positives: hormones are important to health and well-being, but they are often misunderstood and underrated by most providers. dr. green sheds light on the topic.

the negatives: ahh. pretty much everything else.

A couple important notes for those new to the hormone topic:
-the idea "balancing hormones naturally" through diet, exercise, and sleep is a lot of work for little payoff. i'm not claiming that it's fruitless, but you'll be trying to control these facets of your life every day, only to raise the hormone levels by 5%. ultimately, the ONLY thing that can replace estradiol is estradiol. the ONLY thing that replaces testosterone is testosterone. And the only thing that can replace progesterone is progesterone. if you're deficient, your best bet is to directly replace this bioidentically, because that's the most direct method to achieving symptom resolution.

-dr. green embraces synthetic hormones as an option. i'm not an expert, but between anecdotes and exposure to BHRT (bio-identical hormone replacement therapy), i run from anyone who recommends a synthetic route. typically, it's because synthetic blends tend to mask issues and create later problems.

-dr green completely misrepresents and underrates progesterone. if you read his words about prog, you would think, "whoa, i'm better off not having that. i don't want sluggishness and fatigue." and he says it's "the pregnancy hormone." (newsflash: the highest hormone during pregnancy is ESTRADIOL. progesterone levels do rise, but your estradiol far outpeaks the prog.) Progesterone is important for three big factors (at minimum) - quality sleep, being a woman's "natural valium" (aka being calming/anti-anxiety), and oh yeah - preventing cancer. so overall... pretty necessary. (PS. dr green claims that men don't have progesterone at all, which is not only false, but BHRT doctors may even prescribe for men if there's a deficiency).

-i have a real issue with his 'case-in-point' about a patient with preventing migraines by using a hormone blocker + anti-seizure medication. migraines can be caused by too LITTLE estradiol, and one option to fully treat is to raise your estradiol and then control dosage throughout your menstrual cycle (if you're cycling) to avoid crashes. many women attest to bioidentical hormone replacement, specifically estradiol, as the factor that cured their migraines. yet somehow, dr green took a route where he bottomed out his patient's hormones and then gave her additional medication. (fyi - bottoming out your hormones causes many other issues, and he doesn't discuss the long-term ramifications of his case study. having deficient estradiol throughout the bulk of your adult life as a woman has serious negative consequences on bone density, mental health, and cardiovascular health.)

if you want to learn about hormones, go research dr. neal rouzier and his work.

I really enjoyed this book. It holds a wealth of information about women and hormones. What I really enjoyed, Robert Greene was not pushing prescription meds. He recommended prescription meds and surgery as an absolute LAST RESORT!!! He offered holistic treatment, and of course diet and exercise.

Something I learned and didn't know about is the link between paraben use and our hormones. Also, paraben is linked to cancer. After looking at some products paraben is in just about all health and beauty products.
