We didn’t know each other very well. We’d met at graduate school and liked each other, but we’d just never spent much time together. When one of our favorite professors became gravely ill, we came together to support each other through the difficult time. We began to share how afraid we were—of losing our teacher and of the many vulnerabilities of life. What is the true meaning of life? How do we keep ourselves going when everything is falling down around us? What can we do to overcome our fears? The more questions we asked, the more we began to reflect upon our own lives and the events that had transpired to bring us together that day.
