About the author

Amanda Reid-Stevens was born in Toronto, Ontario, to Mabel Stevens and legendary artist Bill Reid. Amanda moved to Skidegate, Haida Gwaii, when she was a teenager, and the family quickly became immersed in the activities of the busy community. Amanda, and her late brother, Raymond, who was also an accomplished artist, were raised by their mother and stepfather, Bill Stevens, who was a logger, commercial fisherman, and argillite carver.

The Canoe He Called Loo Taas celebrates the true story of a 50-foot, community-carved canoe made from a single cedar tree, which was designed and carved by Amanda’s late father, Bill Reid. Loo Taas (prounced,“loo toss,”) are the Haida words meaning “wave eater”).

Amanda is the loud, proud mom of three grown children, and a shamelessly boastful Nanaay (grandma) of two wee granddaughters.

Beautiful little book. Simple rhyming story with great illustrations, plus detailed info in the end pages about Loo Taas. Seems like a great book for classrooms and libraries.
