The Field Guide to Freshwater Invertebrates of North America focuses on freshwater invertebrates that can be identified using at most an inexpensive magnifying glass. This Guide will be useful for experienced nature enthusiasts, students doing aquatic field projects, and anglers looking for the best fish bait, lure, or fly. Color photographs and art, as well as the broad geographic coverage, set this guide apart.
An all around great field guide! The chapters are broken up logically, and the writing is accessible for naturalists of all levels. The guide is very useful in identifying organisms to the order level, but there isn’t a ton of detail for families and below (though significant families in each order are described and pictured). Every chapter (excluding the introductory sections at the beginning) provides a detailed introduction to the biology and ecology of a group of organisms, and I loved that information on “collection and culturing” was included. Overall, I really enjoyed reading through this guide and am excited to use it in the field come spring.
Another good aquatic invertebrate fieldguide. Unlike QuickGuide to Major Groups of Freshwater Invertebrates this one uses photos rather than drawings and describes the inverts next to the photos. It's good a explaining aquatic ecosystems and some basics of sampling techniques. Useful for the sampling I do for a local water quality group.
