First, I should note that I got the edition published in 1995 by C&T Publishing from my public library.

I don't really expect my quilting books to be self-help books in disguise. I admit, the "pep talks" on trusting my own creativity and other similar themes were not really what I was looking for. It is also more about creating landscapes on your own than a true step-by-step how to, but that was okay with me. The examples were really nice, were varied, and I liked that only about half were by the author, so you get some variety in style. One thing that bothered me was that she continually talked about not trying to recreate a photograph or even a specific place but just capture the feeling of a place, and yet several examples, especially in the gallery at the end, were of specific places.

I did like that the emphasis was on small. She actually frames most of her landscapes, rather than making true quilts out of them, but that's an interesting concept that I may consider. Or I could just use her basic techniques and use them for a top of a (small) quilt. I've been interested in trying to create fabric landscapes for a while, so it was good to get basic tips on how to layer and to attach top to bottom, etc. Becuase of the age of the book, many of the fabrics seem somewhat dated but that isn't too surprising and didn't hinder my being able to see similar projects in more modern fabrics.
