This was probably the first (and only YA) that began with the antagonists. I hated them, could not understand what was going on, thought the book highly overrated, and did not read it until quite a few years later (this was one of the books i had gotten as bday present for my 10th bday).

But once I managed to read past the first chapter (some years later), i was hooked. It's a YA adventure complete with villanous characters (the sharkes), and our 4 young heroes. Fans of five find outers, secret seven, will love it, even though it's not quite exactly the same...

I'm surprised to be the first one to review this slice of nostalgia. In my young teen years, *this* is what I remember good YA literature representing, not an arsenal of androgynous vampiric protagonists squaring off against the oddly articulate zombie or the hulking, blue-jean-clad werewolf. (Not that I have anything against androgyny.)
