Destroyers in Action is a resource for mainly modelers but it is a good resource to have an overview of the different classes of destroyer escorts and the different jobs the Navy had them do. The pictures are worth getting a mental picture say if you are reading Hornfischer's Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors, Andrews Tempest, Fire and Foe, Franklin's Buckley Class Destroyer Escorts, Y'Blood's Hunter Killer or Stafford's Little Ship Big War (anyone one of those books are highly recommended for good DE reading). The destroyer escorts are an underappreciated class of warship. They were cheap, easy to make, easily manned with small crews, and deadly. A review of the history of destroyer escorts is a good reminder that a good and effective ship doesn't have to be an expensive ship.
