At Home in Maine: Houses Designed to Fit the Land

Architect Chris Glass and architectural photographer Brian Vanden Brink make a compelling and visually fascinating argument that the quintessential Maine house is one that fits its surroundings, rather than competing with them. Included are renovated and new houses, as well as other buildings redesigned to be homes.

Somewhat informative and mildly inspiring, but what I really liked about this book was the Epilogue:
"This book is not meant to leave us envying the lucky owners of these houses while we struggle with furnace repairs and the next coat of paint. My hope is that by looking at these examples of excellence, we can look at our own homes with new eyes and see opportunities to "brighten the corner where we are"...Everything we do has an impact on our surroundings... that impact can be negative or positive... Too much of what we see praised seems to do the opposite, to flaunt our successes in our neighbors' faces. If there is anywhere in America where this should not be our goal, it is the state of Maine."
