Romance author Elise Title started writing romances as an escape from her job as a psychotherapist in men's and women's prisons. Though her romances are largely lighthearted and funny, she also writes dark thrillers as a way of dealing with her past job. She also published under the pseudonym Alison Tyler.
What a nice surprise! I had no idea what to expect with this Harlequin Temptation book, but I ended up liking it very much because it was a bit different from my usual. The situation made me laugh. We begin with Emily at Age 12 loving Chris from afar. He's dynamic and charismatic, while she's a bit of a wallflower. But they become friends--she's "good old Em." At the same time we meet David at Age 16. He loves Liza--another beautiful and dynamic person, while's he's the nerd. Again, they are friends, but that's it. Then Emily and David meet--at Chris and Liza's wedding. Of course, they are unhappy and spend the time commiserating with each other, eventually ending up in bed together. As they get to know each other, they find themselves becoming friends, with common interests and shared likes/dislikes. But the shadows of Chris and Liza are still there, interfering with their budding relationship. Of course, it's all predictable, with a HEA, but I enjoyed the ride getting there. Emily and David are great down-to-earth characters, with obvious confidence and self-image problems, but they're perfect for each other. And Chris and Liza are shown as the overbearing and self-absorbed couple that they really are, just not how they were previously perceived by their "loves." This story was entertaining, quick and easy, and very enjoyable. I will look for more from this author.
You Were Meant For Me is the 18th stand-alone romance by American author, Elise Title. Six characters to keep track of: somewhat mousy Emily, always trying to please the gorgeous Chris, with whom she has been in love since second grade, even though he’s never had one romantic thought about her; fashion photographer, David, living his life to please Liza, who sees him as her reliable best friend; Alan, David’s real best friend; Cheryl, Emily’s best friend. When Liza meets Chris, sparks fly and they are soon married, leaving David and Emily heartbroken, and inadvertently comforting each other quite a bit more than they intended. Cheryl and Alan are left to mop up the tears. This romance has a rather predictable plot, which is executed a little tediously, and the characters are one-dimensional, but it could make a good rom-com movie.
