Dr Joynson takes a fresh look at the 'Burt Affair' and concludes that the evidence so far is insufficient to support the accusations made. His conclusions also raise wider issues for psychology itself.
First published in 1989, this book covers the biography of Burt written by Hearnshaw. Each of the ways in which Cyril Burt is believed by some to have transgressed are covered in detail. The author went back and examined original papers, to make his own judgments. Along the way, you learn a lot about Psychology in that setting and about the people involved. Joynson tries to be even handed, but even he can't resist some zingers here and there. The biography of Burt, mentioned before, had me convinced that Burt had cheated, but now I'm not so sure.
