Dr. Bill Bright founder of Campus Crusade said, "If we can win the university today, we will win the world tomorrow." The Fuel and The Flame offers church and parachurch college students, ministry staff and volunteers ten keys to impact students' lives for Christ. Five keys to personal preparation (the fuel) and five keys to ministry implementation (the flame) are defined and expanded on in order to develop students into the future Christian leaders of our world. Through the application of the principles found in this book, students will become reproducing disciples for Jesus Christ, able to impact campuses as well as the world with the Good News.
Dr. Steve Shadrach has a passion for developing laborers for Christ to reach the world. He has been involved with Campus Crusade, The Navs, and as head counselor with Kanakuk Kamps. He served as Pastor of Students and Missions at University Baptist Church in Fayetteville, AR. He is the founder of Student Mobilization, which focuses on evangelizing and discipling college students in the U.S. and abroad, The Traveling Team, and The Bodybuilders ministry, seeking to "build up the body of Christ" through the development of seminars and publications.
The fuel is the first and ongoing step of building godly character, convictions, and strategic planning for evangelism. The flame is the actual ministry of evangelizing, discipling, and sending out those you've discipled to continue the work. I thoroughly enjoyed this book's emphasis on being focused and intentional in the college years, as well as being focused and intentional about the task of making disciples. To be a true a disciplemaker, Steve Shadrach emphasizes how we cannot go about some haphazard relationship-building. Rather, we must always keep in mind the end goal of making a disciple who makes disciples.
This is an awesome book on how to build and grow a Christian campus ministry, written by a man with great experience and insight in that area. Having been involved in campus ministry for 6 years as a graduate and 4 years as a student, I thought that this book would be, at best, review for me. Instead I found myself challenged throughout. Now I have to read it over again, taking thorough notes on how I want to reshape what I do on campus. I highly recommend it.
Shows how the college campus is one of the most important mission fields and gives very practical ways/tips to evangelism and discipleship! Perfect for any Christian college student!
This was a great book to put some things into perspective. Definitely showcases the importance of evangelism really well. The only issue I had with the book is that at times it seemed to downplay the emotional and feeling aspect of religion. That to me is a very big part of my religion, so it bugged me a bit.
Incredible book for someone desiring to make an impact for Christ. Gives ideas and tools that can set a people group on a campus or anywhere on fire for the Lord. Wish I would’ve read this three years earlier! I have had the privilege of meeting Steve and am involved in one of the ministries he began, and I can confirm Christ has used him in unreal ways!
This moved my heart towards the truth and impact that God had for me while I was at University. It is an easy to follow guide to mobilize your friends and others around towards God and his eternal purposes.
A helpful, convicting, and encouraging guide on how to reach some of the most influential and impassioned people on the planet: college students. Also a good guide on how to develop a zeal for spreading the Gospel & making disciples of all peoples.
My entire perspective of what it means to be a Christian college student has radically changed, and I couldn't be more excited about all the ways I've been convicted to commit myself more fully to knowing Jesus in college and making Him known!
Great book for anyone involved in college ministry, whether you are just a student in a Christian group or you are a minister on a college campus this book is a must read.
one of my all-time favorites. If you are a christian on a college campus, and have a desire to create a movement of christians that are eagerly seeking the Lord, read this book.
I’ve been involved with collegiate ministry for 11 years now and I wish I had read this book long before. A great resource for anyone who has a heart for college students.
Super practical. Inspiring. Very helpful for thinking about reproducing your faith effectively. Designed for college campuses, but really great strategies that apply across the board.
Is this a good book to read? Yes. Could this book have been 25% shorter? Yes. Basically, the good points of this book get overshadowed by lengthy tangents and stories about frat guys or having the point reiterated numerous times. I've heard that Brown Like Coffee is basically a shorter version of this book, but I haven't read it so I cannot confirm. 🤷
I would actually give it 3.5 stars....it has really good content, but because everything is written in step by step processes, you almost feel like you need to make an outline of it to put all the points together. He's very systematic and formulaic. Again, all of his content is really good, I just think we have to understand while reading it that there are very good principles in it, but the Lord is the One to be trusted with the results.
