This is the story of island Melanesians and of the Rhenish missionaries who brought the first continuing Christian presence to volcanic Karkar Island, northeast of Madang. This presence began on July 2, 1890 and was abruptly ended on August 3, 1895, as a result of a destructive eruption on Bagiai volcano.
