A curated collection of letters, and therefore limited--and of course it includes nothing of Stein's own words--but it sketches out an interesting picture nonetheless, more a picture of the times/environs (Stein as cultural epicenter) rather than her actual life. I mainly read this because the book was a gift to me when I graduated from college and I felt guilty about how long it had been sitting uncracked on my shelves. But I've discovered this year that letters make GREAT bathroom reading, if that's not TMI. And it was also interesting to read this after having read a collection of Virgil Thomson's letters a few months ago, since Stein and Thomson were very close collaborators (and had an up and down friendship).
