Emma Fitzroy, daughter of the late Sir Fitzroy of Fenton Hall is out riding on her estate with her neighbour, Sir Luke Acton, when they are overtaken by a curricle being driven erratically. Suddenly, the vehicle hits a pothole and the elderly driver is thrown into the ditch and knocked unconscious. Emma and Sir Luke take the old man back to Fenton Hall, where they realise he has lost his memory.
