Into the Bear Pit is the most talked about sports book for years. Throughout the summer of 2000, Mark James's inside story of the Brookline Ryder Cup was never out of the sports headlines and took up a lengthy residence in the upper reaches of the Sunday Times' bestseller list. Fuelled by a media feeding frenzy, the controversy rapidly gathered enormous momentum and eventually led to James's resignation as one of Sam Torrence's assistants for the 2001 Ryder Cup at Belfry. Read about Mark James's rocky relationships with Nick Faldo and Tony Jacklin and the infamous disposal of Faldo's good luck letter. Read about the extraordinary behaviour of American Players, wives, officials and spectators during the 'Battle of Brookline'. Read the most explosive golf book ever published.
Some books are bland, giving little of the insight and detail that are not already accessible. Fortunately, this book exceeds expectations, and Mark James writes in a pleasing, easy to read style whilst providing content The book is about the 1999 Ryder cup in Brookline and starts with a look at Mark's successful golf career, his clashes with authority, and his selection as Ryder Cup captain. It then centres on build up, the team selection process, and finally, a day to day guide throughout the controversial Ryder Cup match. He gives a frank opinion of leading players past and present and takes you through the Ryder Cup process of the transport, meals, team room, ceremonies, partners, caddies, tactics, and assistants. It's heartfelt and made more dramatic by the ebb and flow of the contest and strong views about the US players and supporters' behaviour. A very good and detailed book that I would recommend to anyone interested in the Ryder Cup
