Not so much a disappointment, just ‘middle of the road’ for me. A German-born friend gave me this bio after I mentioned watching the film ‘Taking Sides’ about Furtwängler and the post-WWII Denazification processes/trials, plus the vexed debate about whether art can be separated from politics in such times. On the downside = the text was detailed but often dry and esoteric. I reckon that would have still been the case if published in English. On the upside = I got a chance to learn more about this talented, also-seen-as 'controversial' conductor, and practise my German.
