This is a most inspiring book. The dedication and commitment of those who fought with or supported the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, or the other international battalions, was incredible. This book tells the story in the participants' own words. And what stories — the hardships endured just to get to Spain, including evading the French gendarmes; the hard battles fought against the much better equipped fascists; the refusal of the "democratic" countries to do anything to assist the Spanish Republican government while Nazi Germany and fascist Italy poured weapons and aircraft into Spain to buttress Franco; the horrifying inhumanity of the Spanish fascists and those fighting for them; and the persecution these heroes received for the "crime" of being "premature anti-fascists." Or persecution simply for being anti-fascists.
A painful reminder of just how upside down our world is, and the price paid by those who put their bodies on the line to bring about a better world.
Very good stuff. Roughly 50 entries from different folks, most of whom were volunteers in the Lincoln Battalion. Written in each persons own voice, these short essays give an amazing picture of the horror of war, the glory of the struggle and the hope of a better world. REALLY wonderful book.
