IF YOU are into history, this is the best book ever. Welles, a literate, crusty old connecticut Yankee (back when Connecticut was part of new england..), he writes virtually every day, as sec of the navy, from Buchanan through Lincoln and Johnson. You can see how his opinions of Stanton (the 19th century Cheney) and Seward change as the civil war drags on.; he's an eye witness to the death of lincoln, and the persecution of Johnson. Unbelievable. You can get these 3 volumes through an inter library loan--(whenever I do this, the books come from Farmington, what's up with that?!)

Apparently an indispensable source for the administration's deliberations on emancipation; and, you know, ironclads and stuff.
